A Mother’s Journey Into ASL

Bayou Suds & Duds began with creativity, handmade products, and a desire to create something meaningful—but the heart behind our story started with my son.

My son was born deaf, and later, he was diagnosed with autism. His journey introduced me to a world I didn’t know much about before: American Sign Language (ASL).

As I began learning ASL so I could communicate with my son, I quickly realized just how important communication and connection truly are. I also noticed something that stayed with me—so many people around him wanted to communicate with him but simply didn’t know how.

I saw firsthand how difficult it could be when someone couldn’t communicate with my son in the language that was most accessible to him. I didn’t want him—or other Deaf and autistic children—to feel disconnected simply because the people around them didn’t know how to sign.

That experience became the inspiration behind Bayou Beaux and our ASL educational products.

Through our ASL books, videos, and learning resources, my goal is to make ASL more approachable, engaging, and fun children, families, educators, and anyone who wants to learn.

I believe learning ASL can create more opportunities for communication, understanding, inclusion, and connection.

What started as a personal journey for my family has grown into something I hope can help other families too.

This is my way of sharing the gift of ASL that became such an important part of our family’s journey.

My hope is that my son—and children like him—will grow up surrounded by more people who know how to communicate with them, understand them, and help them feel truly connected.
